California Natural is a brand of dog food that describes its ingredients as “pure and simple.” Their website states that they use a single protein source in each food in order to specialize their products for dogs with dietary and nutritional needs. The Dog Food Advisor rates California Natural kibble as an average, recommended dog food, and rates their canned and grain-free foods as above average and highly recommended. Always consult an experienced veterinarian prior to making any changes in your dog’s diet.

Meat

California Natural dry foods for puppies are made with chicken meal and lamb meal. The regular and low-fat adult dry foods are made with chicken and lamb. The adult canned foods are available in chicken, lamb and salmon recipes. Their website describes “meal” as “a cooking process used to reduce the moisture and fat from animal tissue.” California Natural promises that all of their meats are USDA/FDA standard and nutritious.

Fatty Acids

California Natural foods are fortified with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These supplements are considered healthy fats, according to some veterinarians. Omega-6 is believed to help prevent dry and flaky skin, as well as dull, dry coats. Omega-3 is believed to be an anti-inflammatory that can help with allergies and itchiness. California Natural also supplements their foods with vitamin E.

Taurine

Taurine is added to California Natural dog foods that do not contain poultry. Taurine is an amino acid that is believed to assist with proper functioning of the nervous system. It is found in meat, with chicken containing the highest concentration. Taurine is also present in some vegetables, but the greatest amounts come from animal protein sources.

No Preservatives

California Natural’s website states that their food contains no preservatives or chemicals. It is also free of wheat, corn, soy and byproducts. The website notes that vitamin E and vitamin C are used to preserve the food. Natura, the manufacturers of California Natural, state in their pet nutrition philosophy that only nutritious ingredients are added to their products. None of the foods contain BHA or BHT, which may be carcinogenics.

Grain Free

Natura were the originators of dry grain-free food. For dogs with special dietary requirements or whose owners prefer a grain-free diet, California Natural offers a variety of grain-free dry dog food in kangaroo, salmon meal, chicken meal, lamb meal and venison meal recipes. These foods also contain a single protein source, nutrients and omega-3 and -6 fatty acids.
