How to Keep a Dog From Chewing Toilet Paper

    Is your doggie decorating the house with bits of toilet paper and eating half the roll in the process? Some dogs have a fascination with eating paper, but that TP treat can end with a trip to the emergency room, so put a stop to it now.

    Step 1

    Figure out the cause of the behavior if you can. Puppies eat toilet paper for a number of reasons. Some just have a destructive gene in them and will eat anything they can destroy. Because toilet paper is easy -- and fun -- to destroy, this could just be a question of going for what's more accessible. Your dog could also suffer from pica, a condition that makes dogs -- and people -- eat non-food materials such as paper and chalk. Think Fido might be suffering from pica? Have your vet check in out and see if he has any nutritional deficiency that might be causing the paper eating.

    Step 2

    Hide all extra toilet paper rolls and either close the bathroom door or take the roll out of the toilet paper dispenser. Many puppies grow out of their paper-eating phase after a while. In the meantime, you really have little choice but to keep the paper away from him. Put paper towels and tissue paper away -- just in case your pooch decides to give another type of paper a try once you take away the toilet paper.

    Step 3

    Resist the temptation to yell, scream or cause a commotion. Puppies love attention, good or bad. If you ignore him most of the day and he only gets direct interaction when he's eating toilet paper, what do you think he'll be doing every single day? If you catch him in the act, say "no, bad dog!" once, then get him out of the bathroom and close the door. No long talks or scolds.

    Step 4

    Check Fido's toy chest. Does he need a few more? He might be eating paper to ease his boredom. Maybe he's hungry and bored? Get him a chew bone or rawhide. It will keep him busy and entertained and it will serve as a snack to keep hunger at bay until his next meal time.
