When considering adding a puppy to your family, deciding on the size and coat length of your potential pet is a first step. Small, short-haired breeds can be good for people who live in small apartments or homes, for example. Short-haired breeds are sometimes chosen because of the potential for less shedding than some longer-haired breeds.
Beagles are one of the most popular breeds in the United States, according to the American Kennel Club. The breed was made famous, in part, by Snoopy the dog, a character in Charles Shultz's comic strip, "Peanuts." Beagles are generally black, tan and white. They are often used as hunting dogs for their keen sense of smell and agility. Beagles are usually 13-16 inches tall about weight 18-35 pounds.
The American Kennel Club describes this dog as "a 3-year-old child in a dog suit." The breed is a cross between a bulldog and a terrier. These dogs were popular sporting dogs in the 1800s, according to the AKC. At full adult size, bull terriers stand about 21 inches tall and can weigh anywhere from 50-70 pounds. Their coats are short, coarse and shiny.
Chihuahuas are considered part of the toy dog family. They can have long or short coats, and breeders should be able to tell you whether a litter will be short- or long-haired. The short-haired variety need little grooming as their coats are soft and glossy. The breed is thought to have originated in Mexico.
The pug is one of the oldest breeds of dogs. They are said to have originated sometime around 400 B.C. They were later popular in China and were considered regal dogs as many emperors and other dignitaries owned them. They can weigh between 14 and 18 pounds and stand about 10 inches tall. The breed is a great family dog, though they are prone to shedding. Their coats are short, however, and are generally coarse and glossy. This breed is also prone to health problems due, in part, to their pushed-in noses; they often have trouble breathing in hot climates, for example.
Toy Fox Terrier
Toy Fox Terriers are intelligent dogs with lots of energy. They are great at hunting and flushing out small animals such as rodents, according to the AKC. These dogs are loyal and can be great companions for energetic families. They are not recommended for families with very small children, however, according to the AKC. This breed comes in a variety of colors including white, tan, brown, black or a mixture. The dogs are 8 to 11 inches tall.
