During times of economic uncertainty some constants remain. Man's best friend, his dog, will still have a place at his proverbial table. Americans spend billions annually feeding their canine pals, and some of the largest dog food companies in the world are in America. Pet products are a booming industry, with many front runners, especially in the pet food arena.
The super power known as the Mars company is a leader in sales with their multiple pet food lines. Based in McLean, Virginia, the Mars company is the brainchild behind such brands as Pedigree, Nutro, Whiskas and Greenies. In addition to their impressive sales, the Mars company seeks to provide a better world for pets through their Mars University, Petcare Academy. Despite its global presence, and Fortune 500 status, Mars remains 100 percent family owned. The company employs 72,000 people internationally, and greater than 1/3 of that workforce is in the United States.
Hills Pet, part of the Colgate Palmolive family, and headquartered in Topeka, Kansas, is also a major contributor of pet nutrition products. Hills is responsible for the creation of such brands as Ideal Balance, Prescription Diet and Science Diet. Hills sought the assistance of more than 150 veterinarians and pet nutritionists in the creation of its products. Hills sells to consumers internationally at veterinary offices and pet product retailers, and its Food, Shelter & Love program feeds homeless animals in nearly 1,000 shelters each day.
The mega giant Procter and Gamble, or P&G, contributes to the pet food arena with their Iams and Eukanuba brands. P&G, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, takes an active initiative to improve the lives of companion animals by partnering with such organization as the American Animal Hospital Association, and the American Kennel Club. In addition to their pet nutrition products, the Iams company rehomes millions of animals annually through their Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive.
With headquarters located in beautiful San Francisco, Del Monte is an American leader in pet nutrition with such brands as Milo's Kitchen, Kibbles 'n Bits and Nature's Recipe. After acquiring Milk-Bone and Meow Mix in 2007, Del Monte moved into a leading position as a provider of quality pet snacks, and became the second largest company in the pet product industry. The Del Monte name originated in the late 1880s, with coffee as one of its earliest offerings.
The pet care industry boom is expected to continue, as awareness of the importance of companion animals increases. The right food for your canine companion isn't a matter of brand or name. It is a matter of finding the right nutritional balance for your dog's specific needs.
