Dogs can suffer from allergies just as humans do. Allergens that cause allergies are inhaled, make skin contact or ingested. The response from a canine body is to release histamines to fight off the allergies and results in allergy symptoms. Allergic symptoms are more common in setters, retrievers, terriers and flat-faced dog breeds. Consult your vet as soon as you suspect your dog has allergies before treating him with any supplements. Veterinarian supplements are made especially for pets, so please don't share your pooch's meds.

Allergy Symptoms

Canine allergy symptoms include itchy and running eyes or ears, constant licking on the area infected or scratching until skin becomes red, scabbed or moist. Dogs may exhibit sneezing, diarrhea and vomiting from allergies. Some fur buddies snore profusely if the allergen causes throat inflammation and will keep you awake as well. If your dog displays any allergy symptoms, a trip to the vet is necessary to make a diagnosis and seek treatment.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids occur naturally in fish and flaxseeds. This type of essential acid is not commonly found in dog foods and a supplement helps to bring balance to a furry friend's inflammatory response to allergens. Omega-3 can also reduce inflammation from allergies and from arthritis. Consult with your vet before starting an omega-3 schedule.

Omega-6 Fatty Acids

Omega-6 fatty acid, or linoleic acid, maintains skin strength and moisture for a shiny coat to prevent dry or scaly skin from allergens in your four-legged friend's environment. Keeping your canine's skin and coat healthy wards off skin allergies that can increase in itchiness and become a painful sore from excessive biting and scratching. Your vet will direct you on how much and how often to give this supplement to your pet.

Diphenhydramine Capsules and Chewables

An inexpensive allergy medicine for dogs is diphenhydramine. It is available in capsules, chewable tablets, tablets and a liquid to dispense easily to your pet. The antihistamine reduces allergy symptoms in dogs and has an anti-nausea effect, because it causes drowsiness. Contact your vet for the dosage and duration for your pet.
