Enalapril maleate can help your pup's cardiovascular health in a variety of ways. If he has severe heart failure or high blood pressure, enalapril maleate may be part of the vet's treatment plan. It's also useful for treating chronic kidney failure and reducing fluid accumulation in the lungs.
Enalapril Maleate at Work
If your pup is suffering from heart failure or high blood pressure, his heart has to work harder to keep his blood flowing. Enalapril maleate is an angiotensin converting enzyme, or ACE, inhibitor that can lend his heart a helping hand. Working with hormones released by his kidneys, enalapril maleate ultimately prevents angiotensin II from being created, keeping his blood vessels relaxed and open. The end result is his heart isn't working so hard, and his blood pressure decreases. Enalapril maleate has some side effects, including dizziness, decreased appetite, nausea and diarrhea. Lethargy and listlessness can indicate his blood pressure has dropped too significantly, warranting a change in the dose. Additionally, potassium levels may increase from the drug. Because of its relationship with the kidneys, your vet should monitor your dog's kidney function. A pregnant or nursing dog should not take this medicine.
