Your veterinarian might recommend dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) for a variety of canine issues. This clear, odorless drug, marketed under the trade name Domoso, absorbs into the skin rapidly. Not only is DMSO anti-inflammatory, it also relaxes muscles, dilates blood vessels and increases urine production. It contains anti-fungal properties. One caveat: Dogs receiving DMSO often give off a garlicky odor while on the drug. Pregnant dogs shouldn't receive DMSO, as it can harm fetuses.
DMSO Uses
If your dog experiences arthritic issues, your vet might prescribe DMSO for topical application on affected joints several times a day, for a period not exceeding two weeks. Dogs suffering from cystitis might also receive DMSO. Methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM), a DMSO derivative, is available over the counter in powder and tablet form as a joint supplement. Always consult your vet before giving your dog any type of supplements.
