Where are Boxers Ranked Among the Most Popular Dogs?

Boxers are a large, athletic breed ranging from 21.5 to 25 inches in height. These dogs originated from Germany, where they were bred to aid hunters in pinning bison and wild boar. Today they are best-known as loyal, loving companions who crave human affection.

According to the American Kennel Club, boxers ranked No. 7 among the most popular dogs in the United States in 2012. At the top of the list are Labrador retrievers, German shepherds, golden retrievers, beagles, bulldogs and Yorkshire terriers. Boxers have stayed on the top 10 list of dog breeds for nearly a decade, ranking as No. 7 in 2011, No. 6 in 2007 and No. 7 in 2002. This handsome breed is a common choice in numerous cities throughout the country. According to the AKC's 2012 statistics, boxers are the fifth most popular dog in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver and Long Island. In Washington, D.C., and Boston they are the fourth most common dog.
