Soloxine is a medication used for the treatment of hypothyroidism in dogs. Used properly, benefits outweigh risks. No side effects from proper use are known. However, it is important to be aware of possible effects of overdose.
Overdose Is a Risk With Soloxine
Low levels of thyroid hormone, hypothyroidism, can lead to weight gain and changes in a dog's skin and coat quality. When a dog's diagnosed with hypothyroidism, a vet may prescribe Soloxine, or levothyroxine sodium, tablets to regulate hormone levels of the thyroid gland. While no side effects are reported with regular dosage, toxicity can occur with overdose. Symptoms of toxicity include increased thirst and urination, high blood pressure, lethargy and sometimes personality change. Always follow veterinarian orders and prescribed dosages when using Soloxine.
